Opening the doors to Strand Spinning Mill

Portview opened the doors of the former Strand Spinning Mill during European Heritage Open Days in September 2026, giving visitors an opportunity to explore one of East Belfast’s distinctive industrial buildings.

Guided tours introduced the history and architecture of the mill, its role in Belfast’s manufacturing past and the story of how the complex has gradually been adapted into Portview Trade Centre.

The tours also provided an opportunity to talk about the work still to be done. Large areas of the listed complex remain challenging to bring back into use, and the long-term stewardship of a building of this scale requires continued investment, conservation and new economically sustainable uses.

That combination of history and future is central to Portview’s approach. The aim is not simply to preserve an industrial building as a relic of the past, but to keep it active: supporting businesses, learning, culture and community activity while protecting the character that makes the former Strand Spinning Mill important.

Opening the building to the public helps make that story visible and allows more people to understand both the significance of the site and the opportunity represented by its next chapter.
